Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir demands release of Sarjan Barkati, whose health deteriorates in jail

“Political revenge against our party leaders, release Sarjan Barkati”

Islamabad, Mar 15: Chairman of Ummat e Islami Jammu Kashmir and Mirwaiz of South Kashmir, Qazi Ahmed Yasir today called for immediate release of party senior leader Moulana Sarjan Barkati as his health is deteriorating in the prison and the court has already quashed his Public Safety Act in January.

Moulana Barkati was instrumental in the civilian uprising of 2016 by leading massive public rallies in various parts of South Kashmir. His growing popularity earned him alias of “Freedom Chacha” but also led to him being the most wanted leader of the uprising. He was arrested in October last year and was booked under the PSA and lodged in several jails of the state, including Kotbalwal in Jammu.

The court had quashed his PSA in January and ordered his release but Moulana Barkati, whose wife and two small children are waiting for his release, has now been shifted to central jail Srinagar. “This is political revenge against our party leaders and cadres based in South Kashmir, that showed stiff resistance against the brutal rule,” Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir said.

“We demand immediate release of Moulana Barkati as he should be out with his family. He is suffering from multiple health problems by remaining in jail and being shifted from one place to another. His wife is also suffering due to his imprisonment and has also fallen unwell.”

Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir also said that politicians are now once again active in South Kashmir for the Lok Sabha elections, asking for votes. “These politicians were in hiding during months long civilian uprising and only responded to people’s sentiments with pellets and bullets. Jailing people who demand their genuine rights is neither democracy nor justice. The government should release all the political prisoners, including so many youth, who only expressed dissent,” he said.
