SRINAGAR MAR 16: Police thrashes journalists, photojournalists identified as Mubashir Khan and Tauseef Mustafa, Farooq Javed Khan , Umar Sheikh, Imran Nisar at Hyderpora where separatist leaders were holding a protest today.

Reports said that the photo journalists were beaten up by the police while they were arresting the separatists. Many other reporters were also assaulted by the police who were trying to carry out their professional duties.

The leaders staged the protest after police barred them from holding a press conference at the residence of Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani. The leaders were arrested and shifted to police station Humhama.

Before being bundled into the police vehicle, the trio called for the boycott of upcoming parliamentary by-polls.

While reacting on the incident of thrashing of media persons, veteran journalist Yousuf Jameel wrote on his facebook, “Thrashing, arresting and inflicting terrible atrocities on journalists and other media persons has been part of the ‘preamble purposes’ of successive governments. You complain only if and when you have hoped that justice will be done. We have had bitter experiences. False assurances have only belied the true gravity of the situation we are caught in”. (PTK)
