Srinagar, Mar 15: Expressing concern and dismay over the approach of government in maintaining Srinagar-Jammu national highway, CPI (M) senior leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today said travelling on the 300-km long highway has become a nightmarish experience for the people as the condition of the artery road has gone from bad to worse.
In a statement issued to KNS, he said, “Travelling on the highway is a nightmare of unspeakable proportions. Students, patients, traders and other people, who have to commute between Srinagar and Jammu, are suffering immensely as the government has left the people helpless.”
“Due to the closure of the highway for the last one week, the supplies to Kashmir have been badly affected and there is acute shortage of essential commodities in the Valley. Though the government claims that the highway has been upgraded than what it was decades before, and a great deal of regular maintenance has gone into it, fact remains that people have been subjected to great discomfort due to the worsening condition of the road,” he said.
“Landslides and the sinking portions of the highway have reduced the safety of travellers and hardly a day passes without any accident. With the ever-increasing number of vehicles on the highway, there is traffic everywhere on the road. For how long can people live in these nightmarish conditions is a common refrain among people here, seething with anger over the indifferent attitude of the government,” the CPI (M) leader added.
He questioned why there had been delay in opening of the Chenani-Nashri tunnel? “Why is government delaying to inaugurate the 9.2 km long tunnel which would have reduced the distance by 31 kms?” he asked.
He also asked the government to expedite the work on four-lane highway which is going on for years now. (KNS)
