Srinagar, April 1: Police in Kashmir Valley has arrested a top Hizbul Mujhadeen commander from Srinagar city. The arrest of the commander is a major setback to the militant organization that is spearheading a movement against Indian rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
Reliable police sources said that Hizb commander was apprehended while he was in Srinagar to a health checkup.
Police identified the apprehended militant as Aamir Wagay alias Ibn Qasim, District Commander for Anantnag. Wagay is a resident of Goriwan locality of Bijbehara town.
A senior CID official while confirming his arrest, said “Aamir was trying to develop some contacts in Srinagar.”
“He was in Srinagar for quite some time and was trying to establish contacts there. The operation was executed on the basis of planned surveillance on the movement of the militant. He was arrested from an undisclosed location from Srinagar,” an official said.
Sources however said CID sleuths probably from CIK wing in civvies arrested Aamir from SMHS hospital where he was undergoing treatment for kidney and gall bladder ailments.
A computer hardware dealer Aamir joined the militant ranks in early 2014. He was listed in police records as category A++ militant and accused of being involved in many attacks for which cases stand registered against him.
Terming his arrest as a “big jolt” to Hizb ranks, a top police official said “he was involved in several attacks on security forces in Bijbehara area.”
Aamir was allegedly involved in the attack on SDPO- Bijbehara- DSP Irshad Rather on December 24, 2015. The DSP was critically injured after receiving eight bullet injuries. He also was involved in attack on Army and BSF convoy on Srinagar-Jammu Highway in Bijbehara town.”
In the last year’s uprising, Aamir had made several appearances in the town addressing pro-freedom processions. He was also seen leading several road shows and firing gun shots in air on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway.
