‘Integrity, professional honesty is a matter of conscience’
Srinagar, Apr 13: The working journalists association recently held its first meeting at a local restaurant to discuss the problems faced currently by the members while discharging their duties in the present scenario in the state particularly in the Kashmir valley.
According to the statement issued to KNS, the members unanimously adopted the following resolution:
We, the reporters and correspondents working with various national and international media organisations represent events and situation as we see them on the ground. Our reports are always based on the ground situation and the reportage thereof, is a factual representation of what we see and perceive after proper analysis of the ground situation.
As far as comments and analysis are concerned, these are also driven by facts seen on the ground. However, regarding the editorial policies or editorial comments by our respective organizations, those are purely prerogative of the editorial board over which correspondents/ reporters working on the ground ,have no control. Therefore, nothing could be farther from reality to attribute such a comment to the local reporters here.
Working Journalists here are as much a part of the society as any other professionals. But they are free of borders and prejudice as any normal journalist is required to behave in any civilized society.
In a closely knit society like ours, nobody can exist in isolation. For quite some time it has been noticed that people representing different interests and ideologies have been targeting our members on social media etc. in order to thrust their views and ideas on the local working journalists . Unfortunately, some of our members have been targeted through social media etc with an intention to cause physical and mental harm, besides trying to lower their esteem in the eyes of the society.
The integrity and professional honesty of each of our member is a matter of conscience. The intention of this meeting isn’t to clamour for any endorsement of our professional integrity. At the same time it is the duty of every member of our society to ensure that the professionals, including journalists, work with absolute independence .
Pertinently, the working journalists distance themselves from the personal brawl of some of the members of any other local media group. The working journalists continue to work independently without being influenced by the personal like or dislikes of the members of even the Kashmir editors’ groups .
At the end of the meeting it was agreed upon ,to meet after every month to deliberate upon the fresh challenges and problems , if any faced by our fraternity issued by M Saleem Pandit of The Times of India , working president of Working journalists’ Association. (KNS)
