Lauds President Mehbooba’s decision
Srinagar, May 20: Adbee Markaz Kamraz Jammu and Kashmir has welcomed the appointment of noted writer Zafar Iqbal Manhas as the vice president of J & K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL).
In a statement to KNS, AMK spokesman said that it has been after over three decades that Academy has got a vice president which is the position approved in its constitution. “By choosing Zafar Iqbal Manhas as the vice president, the Academy president has made a right choice as he not only is an established writer but also has contribution in shaping up the Academy” he said.
The spokesman recalled how Zafar Iqbal Manhas stood like a rock while fighting for the autonomy of the Academy during his tenure as Secretary. “Manhas could have easily manipulated his position and got extension for two years to continue had he not shown resilience to fight against those who were in power and were adamant to erode its autonomy” he said adding that Manhas preferred to sit back at home and did not compromise on his principle stand.
This, the spokesman said should go a long way in protecting the unique identity of this important institution with him as the vice president. AMK has lauded President Mehbooba Mufti’s decision and urged her to ensure that Academy’s autonomy is not infringed upon. “We are confident that this institution remains autonomous as per its constitution and are sure that the current dispensation understands its importance” said the spokesman.
