Army manhandle female members, alleges Sopore family

Police registers case

NEYAZ ELAHI

Srinagar, May 2: Police have filed a case against Army for allegedly manhandling four female members including an MBBS student of a family in Bomai Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The Bomai family arrived here in Press Enclave Srinagar on Tuesday and narrated the incident before the reporters. They said Army personnel from Pazalpora based 22 Rashtriya Rifles camp were conducting a ‘survey’ when one of the army man entered into their house and demanded identity card from one of their family members.  “They seized the cell phone of my brother. When he objected, the Army Major started misbehaving. As I asked the Major to stop harassing us, he not only slapped me but also dragged me by my hair. I was beaten to pulp by Major while other army personnel dragged other female members out from the house and thrashed them,” MBBS student Naziya Fayaz while displaying her swollen eye told news agency CNS.

Another family member Naseema Bano said that she tried to intervene but was brutally assaulted.  “Blood oozed out from my head after an army man hit my head with gun butts,” Naseema said while showing stitches on her head.

“Besides, Nazia and Naseema, my two daughters Rameesa and Kounsar were also manhandled and beaten to pulp. My son Tafazul was also not spared. The irony is that Army Major locked the front gate of our house and treated the female folk like cattle,” the head of the family Fayaz Ahmed alleged.

The family has lodged a complaint against the Army Major and his party and sought Chief Minister’s intervention.

Station House Officer Bomai Abdul Majeed told CNS that an FIR vide number 37/2017 has been registered in this regard and investigation has been set into motion.

Srinagar based Defense spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia while refuting the allegations said that Army neither misbehaved nor manhandled anyone. (CNS)
