Bijbehara, May 30: Locals form Chief Minister’s hometown Tuesday appealed Jammu Kashmir Police to initiate action against drug peddlers who according to them sell brown-sugar and other drugs to youth in broad day light.

Locals from Tulakhan Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantang district told news agency CNS that this village has become a hub of drug smuggling. They said that scores of youth from different parts of Kashmir mostly from Srinagar city visit this village on daily basis to procure Brown Sugar from two Dhaba owners.

“This is utterly shameful that these men sell Brown Sugar to budding youth and ruin their lives. We were shocked the other day when one of the youth from Srinagar sold his costly cell phone to procure brown sugar while another youth had stolen a geyser from somewhere and he sold that at cheaper rate to a local,” they said.

The locals said that drug peddlers who run two dhabas near Green Tunnel at Dhoonipora, Hamzahpora falling under the jurisdiction of Police Chowki Sangam are the source of nuisance. “Earlier a police officer had initiated action against these dhaba owners and had even seized liquor bottles in huge quantity from one the two dhabas. This didn’t stop them from indulging in drug trade. We request authorities to look into the matter and if they need proof, we are ready to provide them the same,” they said.

When contacted, a police official said that they had raided these dhabas in past but found nothing. “Police is for the protection of people and we will surely go into the depth of the matter. Nobody spreading drug menace will be spared,” he said. (CNS)
