Natipora-Nowgam traders observe shutdown

Srinagar, May 15: Dotted with potholes and uneven surface, the road from Natipora to Nowgam Bypass is taking a heavy toll on the commuters. The ugly condition of the road sparked a shutdown in dozens of areas here, while people alleged that Roads and Buildings department has been acting as mute spectator though the officials are being apprised about the pathetic condition of the road on daily basis.

Eyewitnesses told news agency CNS that traders from Natipora, Budshah Nagar, Nayek Bagh and Nowgam observed a complete shutdown to attract the attention of Government towards dilapidated roads. The call for shutdown was given by an amalgam of traders’ bodies and local committees. All the shops and business establishments remained shut throughout the day.

Right from Natipora to Nowgam Bypass, the road is in dilapidated condition as a result commuters have been facing lot of inconvenience. The damaged road has also been giving tough time to people and school going children.  In absence of repairs, the road is dotted with dozens of potholes subjecting commuters to inconvenience.

The locals said the Natipora-Nowgam road was macadamized two years ago. “The road has caved in at several places. This has endangered the commuters. It is ironical that Roads and Buildings department has failed to take measures to even fill up the potholes to prevent accidents on the busy stretch,” they said.

They said problem is compounded by blocked drains. Due to slight rains, locals said a vast stretch of road gets water-logged. They appealed the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to look into the matter.

An official from Roads and Buildings department said that road will be macadamized once the government makes funds available for this purpose. (CNS)
