‘Asks national media to stop discussion on Kashmir’

Srinagar, May 8: While calling Jammu and Kashmir as “the crown, soul and lifeline of India” Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Monday said that every youth in Kashmir is not a stone pelter.

Chief Minister speaking to the media on the sidelines of the opening of the civil secretariat offices in summer capital Srinagar, after six months during which these offices functioned in winter capital Jammu.

While responding to a single question posed by reporters here at Civil Secretariat, Mehbooba Mufti said that it is not the first time that Kashmir is in the grip of violence. “Kashmir has been witnessing tumultuous situation since 1947. The leadership realized that violence is no solution to any problem. Indira-Sheikh Accord was result of that. I have myself seen such situation and if act I remember the situation in 1996 when conducting elections was an impossible task,” she said.

Mehbooba said: “Not everyone in Kashmir is a stone-pelter. Not everyone is resorting to sloganeering. Our children are excelling in the field of education and sports. Some children however are disillusioned while some are being incited and goaded,” she said.

Mehbooba Mufti requested Indian based news channels to stop spreading hatred about Kashmir. “I request national news channels to stop showing discussions over Kashmir. They spread hatred about Kashmir as a result hostile atmosphere gets created across country and it also affects our tourism sector,” she said.

The Chief Minister didn’t take further question and left the place when asked to react over the student protests in Kashmir Valley.

Later the Chief Minister chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers soon after the opening of Civil Secretariat here today, the Chief Minister asked the Ministers to undertake joint visits to areas to resolve the issues of people and mobilize local administration at the grassroots level. She said the challenge lies in how effectively and efficiently governance is rendered to the people in a cost and time effective manner.

Mehbooba Mufti asked all the Ministers to work in a team spirit and take the governance delivery as a challenge. She asked the Ministers to work holistically for the welfare of the State and not limit themselves to some particular areas or regions.

The meeting took a comprehensive review of the law and order and development scenario in the State.

Earlier on her arrival at the Civil Secretariat this morning, the Chief Minister was given a ceremonial reception by a contingent of J&K Police.

Members of the Council of Ministers, Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Administrative Secretaries and a large number of employees of the Civil Secretariat accorded a warm welcome to the Chief Minister on her arrival. (CNS)
