Protesters block Srinagar-Leh road for hours

Ganderbal, May 15: The failure of Power Development Department to install a transformer from past two months sparked a protest in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district while locals from Mamar area of the district blocked Srinagar-Leh highway at Mamar Kangan alleging that despite repeated requests PDD failed to install electric transformer in ‘Pakhtoonpora’ village.

The protesters chanting anti-PDD slogans blocked the highway leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for over two hours including school buses and tourist vehicles who visit famous tourist destination, Sonamarg.

People alleged that due to non-availability of power all of them especially the students are facing the brunt.

Later a team of civil administration and police reached the spot and pacified the protesters. The protesters though dispersed peacefully after the assurances given by the officials, threatened to hit again on the roads in case transformer is not installed within a day or two. (CNS)
