Arrest of Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir, Sarjan Barkati, Sajad Hashmi and others political vendetta: UeI

Islamabad, 22 May: The Chairman of Ummat e Islami Jammu Kashmir and Mirwaiz of South Kashmir, Qazi Ahmed Yasir, who is under arrest since Saturday was quoted saying that “in this hour of difficult times, when the state has launched war against pro-freedom leadership and people at all fronts, Kashmiris should stay united and not fall into traps.”

A party spokesperson quoted him saying, “Our personal political views or paths may differ at individual or party levels, but we must not forget that the goal is same – that Kashmir is a disputed territory and its people should be given their right to self-determination.”
The UeI has called arrest of Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir as political vendetta against him for reaching out to people and addressing public gatherings across South Kashmir.Condemning his arrest, a party spokesperson said that several members of the party and its prominent leaders Sarjan Barkati and Sajad Hashmi have already been in jail for months.

“We won’t remain silent with these actions by the government,” the spokesperson said. “They are crushing space for people expressing their views whether political or anything else. While all the pro-freedom leadership is being targeted by government stooges in Indian media, people are being tortured and arrested.”

Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir was arrested by a joint patrolling party of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF on Saturday night near Sarnal area of Islamabad when he was on the way back home after addressing a religious meeting at Nambal area in Mattan. Earlier, on Friday, Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir had defied the police restrictions and led a charged pro-freedom demonstration in Turkwangam area of Shopian, where Indian forces had earlier laid down a siege and caused miseries to people.
