Army soldier injured in ongoing Shopian gunfight

Srinagar, Aug 12: An army soldier was injured in an ongoin gunfight between militants and government forces at Shopian district of south Kashmir.

Official sources told news agency GNS that a Joint team of army’s 3 RR, 55 RR and SOG launched cordon-and-search operation at Astan Mohalla area of Awanura village in Zainpora Shopian following inputs about the presence of some militants.

As such the joint team of forces intensified the combing operation, the militants opened fire while trying to break the cordon triggering off an encounter. However, when reports last came the intermittent firing was going on. Multiple reports said that senior Hizb militants are trapped at encounter site.

During the intial exchange of firing, an army man sustained bullet wounds and has been shifted to military hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, stone pelting clashes erupted near the encounter site. Locals tried to hamper the counter-insurgency operation but police prevented them from going near the gunfight spot, said an official, adding that teargas canisters were used by forces.(GNS)
