Srinagar, Aug 12: A gunfight started between militants and government forces on Saturday in Shopian village of South Kashmir.

Official sources told news agency GNS that a Joint team of army’s 3 RR, 55 RR and SOG launched cordon-and-search operation at Astan Mohalla area of Awanura village in Zainpora Shopian following inputs about the presence of some militants.
As such the joint team of forces intensified the combing operation, the militants opened fire while trying to break the cordon triggering off an encounter.
However, when reports last came the intermittent firing was going on.

Meanwhil, stone pelting clashes erupted near the encounter site.
