SRINAGAR 29 August: A number of building and other construction workers and labourers held a protest rally at Press Enclave in Lal Chowk, Srinagar on Monday 28-08-2017. They were protesting against the apathy of the govt. towards the working class and alleged that the state govt. is not serious about implementing the labour laws in letter and spirit; with the result a large number of workers and labourers do not receive the financial support and other due benefits by the J&K Labour Department and Building and other Constructional Workers welfare board.
It was alleged that the process of registration has been made tedious and some workers are waiting for registration for over two years. Similarly the benefits like scholarship to children, marriage assistance to sons and daughters and financial support cases in the event of death and chronic disease of a labourer are pending for a very long time.
The protesting Union leaders put forth following demands:-
The Building and Other Construction Welfare Board which is presently headless, should immediately be provided with the Secretary / Chief Executive Officer (CEO) which may put the board on rails. Registration process should be simplified, along with online system, the registration forms should be accepted manually as well. All the pending cases of financial assistance should be processed in right earnest and their should be no delay on any excuse.
Among others, Mohd Afzal, Nisar Kamrazi , Bashir Budgami addressed the rally.
