‘Dr Farooq to call on opposition leaders soon’
Srinagar, Aug 25: With unanimity among political parties, except BJP, in the state against striking down Article 35A, National Conference and Congress are mulling to fight the case legally in Supreme Court besides in the streets of the valley.
National Conference patron and MP Dr Farooq Abdullah is leaving for New Delhi “within few days” to talk to opposition parties in New Delhi to galvanise support for Article 35A, KNS has learnt from its sources.
Sources said that the NC is also mulling contesting the petition legally in Supreme Court.
Abdullah, who threatened a mass agitation incase Article 35A was abrogated, is likely to meet the leaders of all the opposition parties and will also meet some eminent lawyers who will defend the Article 35A in the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Congress has formed a two-member committee of its senior leaders, including former Home Minister P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal who have been assigned to discuss the petition of Article 35A with senior lawyers in the Supreme Court.
“The two leaders will talk to senior lawyers in Supreme Court and discuss how to defend the Article 35A. The will form a team of lawyers to defend the case in the court,” sources told KNS.
Article 35A, whose petition is being heard in the apex court for striking it down, is becoming quite emotive issue in the state, with Hurriyat and mainstream parties having warned of mass agitation should it be abrogated by the court. (KNS)
