Srinagar, August 22: A militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter that broke out in wee hours of Tuesday in woods of Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Official sources told news agency GNS that army’s 6 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) intercepted a newly infiltrated group of militants in dense Hafruda forests of Handwara in wee hours today. “The army opened fire towards group 3-4 militants who returned the fire after which a gunbattle ensued,” said the sources.
The gunfight between the two sides continued throughout the day and as per army one militant has been killed so far. “A militant has been eliminated and the operation is in progress,” said an army official. After the outbreak of gunfight, the police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) also rushed to Hafruda forest area to assist the soldiers, the sources said.
There was no report about the injuries or casualties on army side and entire forest area has been cordoned off by the forces to prevent militants from fleeing the encounter spot, sources informed. “The operation has been suspended for the night and it will be resumed in the morning,” they added.(GNS)
