Srinagar, Aug 13: Three militants killed in an encounter with government forces at Zainpora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Two army personnel—Sepoy Alaie Raja and Sepoy Gawai Sumedo— were killed and three others including an officer, Captain Suham, were injured during the initial phase of the gunfight which started at Astan Mohalla in Awanura village of Zainpora late Saturday night.
The gunfight had started last night and government forces including of army’s 3 RR, 55 RR and SOG had started searches to find the militant bodies. However, this morning as the searches were going on, militants, hiding in the area, again opened fire which was retaliated by the forces, triggering off a fresh gunfight.
A police officer told GNS that three militants were killed in the gun battle even as searches in the area continue.
“Three militants have been killed in overnight encounter at Shopian. However we are trying to find if there is anymore dead body under debris. Search operation continues,” the Police officer said.
The identity of the militants is being ascertained, the officer said.
The Joint team of forces had launched cordon-and-search operation following inputs about the presence of some militants on Saturday night.
As the joint team was moving towards the target area, the militants, in a bid to break the cordon, fired upon them, triggering off a fierce encounter.
In the initial gunfight five soldiers including the army captain sustained injuries and were shifted to military hospital Badamibagh Srinagar. Two soldiers later succumbed to injuries, they said. besides Captain Suham, two other soldiers–Sepoy Shiva and Sepoy Prakash Yadav are currently recuperating at Badamibagh army hospital. They said that during the gunfight, four houses were also damaged.
In wake of the gunfight, authorities have blocked internet services in Shopian district and other sensitive parts of south Kashmir.(GNS)
