Inaugurates state-level football tournament ‘Play for Health’
Srinagar, Aug 30: Sports play a vital role in harmonious development of youth and is as important as education, Minister Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat said after inaugurating a state level football tournament at TRC Ground here on Wednesday.
Organized by Health and medical Education Department in collaboration with the J&K State Sports Council and J&K Football Association, the tournament has a slogan “play for health” (Khelo Sehat Ke Liye) with an objective to involve College students from both the divisions of the State.
“The Government has given priority to this sector and has taken various steps for the promotion of Sports activities in the State. The Union Government has been providing liberal funds for upgrading the existing and development of new infrastructure under the sector,” the minister said.
The Department of Health & Medical Education has taken the initiative to give impetus to the sports activities involving large number of youth, especially the college students across the State.
The students from Degree Colleges across the State will participate in the month-long tourney. The matches will be played on knockout basis in almost all the districts. The semis and final of the event shall be played in Srinagar.
Bhagat said that the sports not only keep the youth physically and mentally fit but it also inculcates the sense of team spirit, responsibility, discipline and patriotism that help to make one responsible citizens.
“The sports activities also help in keeping the youth away from the drugs addiction and various other social evils in the society,” he said.
Bhagat said that the initiative will provide an opportunity to the budding players to showcase their talent which will help them to make their way at the national and inter-national level.
He said the football is the popular sports in the State, especially in the Kashmir Valley and hoped that more and more youth will participate in the sports activities in the coming times. He said that Government was making all out efforts to develop sports stadia in every nook and corner of the State to facilitate the sports persons. He said that the ace players of the State will participate at national and inter-national level in various games and bring laurel to the State and nation. He wished high success to the players and organizers for this lengthy sports bonanza. Earlier, the Minister was introduced with the organizers, players and sports staff.
Meanwhile, the organizers also gave mementoes to the Minister and other guests on the occasion.
Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Rather, Project Director, J&K AIDS Control Society, who is also Nodal Officer of the tournament, welcomed the gathering and gave brief account of activities of the tournament.
Dr Mushtaq said that teams from Lakhanpur to Ladakh are participating in the tournament and the semi finals and finals would be played at TRC only. He said the motive of the tournament is to keep youths mentally and physically fit and keep them away from drugs.
