“Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir in police custody for last 42 days”

Islamabad, Aug 18: Ummat e Islami Jammu Kashmir protested against the continuous arrest of its chairman and Mirwaiz South Kashmir, Qazi Ahmed Yasir, on Friday after noon prayers at the Jamia Masjid Islamabad, demanding the immediate release of Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir who has been under custody since July 8.

Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir was arrested on July 8 when he was on way to Tral – the native village of commander Burhan Wani. A party spokesperson said that the members of the party led by Molana Aijaz Noori, Tehsil President Pampore and preacher at the Jamia Masjid Wuyan protested against the long custody of Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir. While addressing the gathering, Moulana Noori said that Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir has been in custody without any case lodged against him.

“This is basic human rights violation and the authorities need to answer for his detention for last 42 days. He has been barred from performing his religious duties as the Mirwaiz of South Kashmir and stopped from addressing the Jamia Masjid for last six Fridays now. Such curbs on religious freedom are only an attempt to stop him from working for the Kashmir movement,” he said.

Saying that the party has planned to launch series of protests across the villages and town against the arrest of Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir, who has been in illegal custody, Moulana Noori also condemned the desecration of Jamia Masjid Wuyan, where Indian flags were painted on the mosque walls. He said that it is desecration and such actions will result in mass agitation due to sensitivity of Kashmiris towards religion.

The party spokesperson also prayed for the speedy recovery of ailing Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who is currently admitted at the SKIMS hospital. He said that the authorities have been putting curbs on leaders despite them having serious health ailments. “We condemn the arrest and not providing proper healthcare to Shabir Shah and also the continuous arrests of other pro-freedom leaders.”
