Appeal Vohra, Mehbooba to intervene

Srinagar, Sep 22: The staff members of Faculty of Forestry (Teaching and Non Teaching), Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Kashmir today condemned the repeated summoning of scientist Dr Syed Naseem Geelani by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), to New Delhi.
In a statement issued to KNS, the faculty members said Naseem has cooperated with the agency in their investigation process and has furnished details regarding his property, bank loan, bank statement and other details which were demanded by NIA.
“It is important to mention here that Dr Naseem Geelani is a well known Scientist in our University and was General Secretary of SKUAST-K Scientists and Teachers Association (SSTA) and has contributed a lot in the field of teaching, research and guidance to the students. He has handled the projects from well reputed Scientific and research department of the country.
The time of the scientist is precious and by frequent calling him to New Delhi, affects the overall academics and research in the university, they said.
“He couldn’t attend the Ladakh tour of B.Sc Forestry Students, also missed the Sports Week and Viva of his student who is pursuing his Ph.D Programme (Dr Naseem Geelani was member of Advisory Committee),” reads the statement.
They said that Dr Naseem is working in the university from Year 2002 and is very sincere to his duties. “Besides being a teacher and scientist he is handling the Students Welfare department and is working as Students Welfare Officer. There is nothing against him as far as his working in the department is concerned,” they added.
The Faculty members in the meeting said just being the son of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani; it is unfair from NIA for repeatedly questioning and summoning him to Delhi. “If there is any information required regarding, he can sent it via mail or speed post. By this way the precious time of the Scientist can be saved which will be utilized for the betterment in the academic and research field. A lot of expenditure is also involved in the traveling to New Delhi off and on besides Psychological torture,” they said.
They appealed the Governor N.N.Vohra who is also chancellor of SKUAST and Chief Minister to intervene in this matter and “tell the NIA authorities not to harass the Scientist”. (KNS)
