Authorities foil 10th Muharram procession

Restrictions in 13 Police station areas cripple normal life

Srinagar, Oct 01: The authorities Sunday imposed strict restrictions in 13 police stations to foil the 10th Muharram procession of the Shia Muslims.
Severe restrictions were put in place in areas falling under the jurisdiction of 13 police stations which include Karan Nagar, Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Shergari, Maisuma, Kothibagh, Kralkhud, Ram Munshi Bagh, Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, MR Gunj and Safakadal.

Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in strength in the restriction bound areas and concertina wires were erected at various places to thwart any possible Muharram procession.
The mourners at various places were seen carrying black banners and shouting slogans in favour of Islam and the martyrs of Karbala. On 10th of Muharram – Youm-e-Ashoora –Imam Hussain (A.S) was martyred 1400 years ago in Karbala, Iraq.
Earlier, the Government had said that there is no ban on the traditional Muharram processions in Kashmir, but processions through some specific areas in Srinagar weren’t allowed.

The Divisional Commissioner, Baseer Ahmad Khan had said that it has been already made clear at various levels that all the traditional Muharram processions would be allowed as per the past practice for which requisite arrangements have already been made by the administration. (KNS)
