Srinagar, October 17: Massive clashes and protests erupted in Rambagh area of uptown Srinagar and in Pulwama district today after locals claimed that unidentified persons cut braid of two women at respective places.
According to GNS, scores of locals including women took to streets at Rambagh and blocked road for vehicular movement. They shouted slogans against the braid cutting and displayed the chopped braid to media men. The protesters also shouted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans and sought an end to these incidents.
While police arrived on the spot and asked protesters to disperse and unblock road, the latter refused after which forces used teargas, triggering clashes in the area. The youths pelted stones on police while police lobbed teargas shells. The clashes between the two sides continued for several hours and affected transport and business activities in the area.
Meanwhile, a shutdown was observed in Maisuma and adjacent areas of city centre against the braid chopping incidents. All the shops and commercial establishments were shut in Maisuma, Madina Chowk, Exchange Road, Gaw Kadal, Budshah Chowk and Red Cross Road against the incidents of braid chopping. Police had sealed off Maisuma and deployed scores of forces men to foil protests by locals.
Massive clashes amid a complete shutdown erupted at Main Town of Pulwama district against chopping of braid of a local lady at Dangerpora area. Scores of youth took to streets in Pulwama Town and enforced shutdown. The protesters also damaged some vehicles for violating shutdown to protest braid chopping. Meanwhile, an incident of braid chopping was also reported from Bandipora area of north Kashmir. (GNS)
