Srinagar, Oct 21: Police commemoration day was observed in all districts of the valley today.
Parades were conducted and tributes were paid to the martyrs of departed souls who sacrificed their precious lives for upholding, safeguarding integrity and sovereignty of the nation. The families of the martyrs and police officers were present on the occasion.
The commemoration day was observed in Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Sopore, Awantipora, Handwara, Bandipora Budgam, Srinagar, Kargil and Leh. At these places the commemoration day was celebrated at their respective district police lines.
Every year on October 21, rich tributes are paid to the policemen who sacrifice their lives while discharging their duties. The day is observed as the Police Commemoration Day, in their remembrance.
Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said that as many as 42 personnel of Jammu Kashmir Police, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP), have been killed in the state during the past one year.
Addressing the personnel at the Police Commemoration Day Parade, he said, “1,622 personnel from Jammu and Kashmir Police have been killed in the last 28 years in the state during counter-militancy operations and militant attacks.”
“42 J&K police personnel security forces have been killed while fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir from September 2015 to August 2016,” DGP said.
He said 1622 police personnel — including one Deputy Inspector General (DIG), one Superintendent of Police (SP), 20 Deputy SPs, 24 Inspectors, 34 Sub Inspectors (SI), 63 Assistant SI, 142 head constables — were killed in the last 28 years in the state. (CNS)
