Students forced to work as ‘Safai Karamcharis’ in Kulgam School

Didn’t force them for work: Headmistress; will take stern action: DC

Srinagar, Oct 11: In a bizarre kind of incident, the students in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district were on Wednesday seen working as ‘Safai Karamcharies’, carrying the mats to clean them outside the school building.
Witnesses informed Kashmir News Service (KNS) that a number of students from Government Middle School Katrussu in Kulgam were seen cleaning school mats. “The school students wearing uniform were seen carrying green mats and cleaning those mats outside the school premises,” witnesses informed.
The locals termed such incidents as ‘betrayal’ with the parents. “We (parents) send our wards to school to study but the teachers there are forcing them to work as Safai Karamcharies,” the locals said.
They demanded that the administration should take stern action against the school administration so that these acts won’t be repeated.
Headmistress of the school, Meema Akhter while talking to KNS said that the students were doing the work on their own will. “We didn’t force the students to clean the mats and other related things. The students cleaned the mats on their own will,” she said.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Talat Pavez told KNS that these incidents are not acceptable. “These things won’t be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against the school head,” he said. (KNS)
