Srinagar, Dec 16: Minister of State (MoS) Health and Medical Education, Asiea Naqash today paid a visit to District Hospital Kupwara and after finding the hospital in dilapidated condition, the dismayed Minister ordered the removal of Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

Sources told news agency GNS, the MoS, during her surprise visit, arrived at District Hospital Kupwara today. She inspected the hospital and interacted with patients directly. After inspecting the hospital and speaking to patients directly, the MoS was dismayed over the working of the District Hospital Kupwara and she on the spot passed directions to senior officials to remove the CMO Dr Parlad Singh.

As per sources, the Minister was told by patients that they are not being provided with any free medicine available in the hospital and instead they have to buy each and every medicine from outside market at much higher prices. The patients also complained about the shortage of staff in the Hospital. The MoS also expressed her unhappiness over the overall working of the hospital, sources added.

The District Hospital Kupwara has since long been in news for poor healthcare facilities. The patients and attendants often complain about the private practice of the doctors, unnecessary referrals to Handwara Hospital and lack of medicines at the hospital besides shortage of staff. “The doctors at Kupwara Hospital often refer patients to private clinics,” they complained.

A government spokesman in a statement said that Minister of State for health Asiea Naqash today conducted a surprise visit to hospitals in Sopore and Kupwara hospitals to review the facilities being provided to patients there.

Speaking with the hospital administration, the Minister directed for working with zeal and dedication to deliver quality healthcare and provide the best facilities to the patients. The Minister also interacted with the patients to inquire about the facilities being provided to them.

During the visit, the Minister also inspected the ongoing works of the additional 200-bedded hospital building at sub-district hospital Sopore. The hospital is being constructed at an estimated cost of 38 crore. The Minister also visited the under construction blocks of 100-bed capacity district hospital Kupwara.

She impressed upon the executing agencies to accelerate the pace of ongoing works on the hospitals so that better medicare is provide to people. Later locals apprised the Minister with their various grievances. The Minister assured them that all their genuine problems would be addressed at an earliest. (GNS)
