Srinagar, Dec 26: Top commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad, a 3ft long dwarf was killed in an encounter with government forces at Samboora area of Awantipora in south Kashmir Pulwama district.


Official sources told Srinagar based news agency GNS that the gunfight ensued after a joint team of army’s 50 RR, SOG and RPF laid a siege of the area last night following inputs about the presence of some militants at Karnabal, Samboora.


“During the course of the gunfight, the house in which the militants had taken refuge was substantially damaged in the firing”.


A police spokesman in a statement to GNS said that a body has been recovered from along with arms and ammunition.


Meanwhile a defence ministry spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said that the slain militant has been identified as Noor Mohd Tantray alias Noor Trali.


He said that the slain was the divisional commander of JeM for South Kashmir.


Director General of police SP Vaid in a tweet said that the slain militant along with his associates were planning to attack a convoy on Srinagar-Jammu highway.


“Encounter going on since last evening in Awantipura district. 

There was input about presence of 2/3 militants near NHW planning to attack convoy. One dead body of militant recovered so far, search for others going on”, DGP tweeted.


A police officer said that Tantray was arrested in Delhi in 2003 and sentenced to life by a POTA court in 2011. He was released on parole but later joined JeM and became its divisional commander for south Kashmir.


Meanwhile, the authorities have snapped internet services in Pulwama district, while railway authorities have suspended train service to south Kashmir.


Railway official said that while services from Srinagar to and fro south Kashmir shall remain suspended today but the rail will ply normally from Srinagar to Baramulla. (GNS)
