Srinagar, Mar 1: Prompted by public complaints that the Amul Butter packs of 10 gm and 20 gm available in the retail market do not carry MRP/PKD/Best Before/Net Contents etc, the field executives of Legal Metrology department Srinagar conducted inspection of retail markets of city Srinagar in order to ascertain the genuiness of the complaint.
The complaint was found genuine and a case was registered against the Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Limited for supplying in the valley the Amul butter packs without mandatory declarations.
The Legal notice was served to the firm for the lapse and the firm in turn submitted that the supplies were meant for institutions and not for retail sale. The bigger pack (consisting of 100 units without any declaration) carry the declaration Not for Retail Sale but the pre-packs were supplied to retail market in violation of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
Every pack within a bigger pack meant for institutions should carry the declaration Not for Retail Sale.
The firm was found supplying the product in the retail market in the garb of institutional supplies thereby infringing upon the rights of consumers. The Joint Controller Mr. Amar Singh held the firm responsible for the offence and slapped a fine of Rs 30,000 on it. (CNS)
