Srinagar, April 9: The internet was filled with angry reactions as people were left shocked at the protests by some lawyers on Monday in Kathua to prevent crime branch from filing charge sheet before Chief Judicial Magistrate against seven out of eight accused in gruesome rape and murder of 8-year-old Asifa Banu in January this year.
“Shame on them & their political masters. An 8-year-old girl is raped & murdered and these so-called lawyers do not want to see justice delivered,” former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter.
Senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari also took to Twitter and criticized the lawyers’ action to prevent the crime branch from filing the charge sheet.
“When lawyers try to prevent Crime Branch from filing the charge sheet before CJM #Kathua in the rape and murder of 8 yr old # Asifa. You can well imagine where we are. #JusticeforAsifa,” he tweeted.
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed surprise over what the lawyers did, saying how one can “stoop so low.”
“What a shame! that some lawyers in Jammu prevent police from filing a charge sheet in the heinous crime of rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl child! How low can one stoop to defend his prejudices and biases! What’s worse is that they are supposed to represent law and justice!,” Mirwaiz tweeted.
“A few years ago an entire nation was on roads wanting new laws against rape, today the custodians of the rule of law are blocking the prosecution in this rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl.
Despite protests by lawyers, the crime branch of police filed charge sheet against seven people, accused in ghastly rape and murder eight-year-old Asifa Banu in Kathua district in January this year.
Senior Journalist Mufti Islah expressed shock over the protest by lawyers.
“Has it happened before. Charge sheet not being allowed to file in Kathua court by lawyers – do you believe it lawyers – in a rape and murder case of an 8-year-old girl. Why, because accused are provided political cover. Goodaism ruling its roost. How shocking?,” he tweeted.
One more journalist, Nazir Masoodi censured the lawyers actions: “shamelessness has no limits. Read the statement by Bar Association Kathua. Now imagine, under what circumstances this trial will be held in Kathua. #JusticeforAsifa”.
“At the time of filing of the charge sheet, some lawyers protested, leading to “law and order’ situation, sources said. Later police had to be called to the spot to tackle the situation, sources said.now, lawyers murdered Indian constitution and law. They do not deserve to this profession.shame on these illiterate hooligans,” tweeted another journalist Shuja-ul-Haq. (GNS)
