Bar Association condemns arrest of Advocate Bukhari


Srinagar, May 15: J&K High Court Bar Association Srinagar, condemned the ‘unwarranted and illegal’ arrest of Advocate Shabir Ahmad Bukhari, member lawyer of the Bar Association by the State Police authorities and described the arrest of the Learned Advocate assault on the judiciary and lawyers.

A General Body meeting of the Bar Association was held at High Court complex, wherein the lawyers expressed deep concern on the arrest of said advocate and demanded his immediate release.

Taking serious note of the illegal arrest of Shabir Ahmad Bukhari, the members of the Bar Association decided to abstain from appearing before the Courts including the Hon’ble High Court in protest against the arrest of the advocate Shabir Ahmad Bukhari.

Accordingly the work remained suspended by the members in the High Court as well as in the Courts subordinate to it at Moominabad. Besides the members of District Bar Association Budgam supported the call of the High Court Bar Association Srinagar.

Addressing the general body meeting the general secretary of the Bar Association G. N. Shaheen informed the members that Advocate Shabir Ahmad Bukhari is reported to have been called on telephone by IGP Kashmir, to present himself before him by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday the 12th of May, 2018. The learned Advocate voluntarily presented himself before the police authorities and since then his whereabouts were not known and was missing in custody, which has forced the lawyers to go for the protest strike demanding immediate release of the Ld. Advocate. The said advocate is a human rights defender and his arrest seems an interruption in due discharge of the professional duties, besides the assault on freedom of judiciary.

The Bar Association demanded immediate and safe release of the Advocate Shabir Ahmad Bukhari forthwith and in case the authorities do not respond, the Bar Association will be forced to take stringent steps at the risk and cost of the State authorities. The Bar Association also condemns the repeated assaults and aggression on the students of Islamic University of Science and Technology Awantipora. It is worth to mention that in the last one month the Indian forces entered the campus forth time yesterday without any reasonable cause and have showered teargas shells and fired bullets in the campus resulting injuries of number of students and the students were carnaged till 11:00 p.m. in the evening in the campus, which caused apprehension among the parents as well as the teaching staff in the campus. The Bar Association feels the repeated armed assaults by the armed forces security forces IUST campus an aggression on academic institutions to destroy the peaceful atmosphere in the campus and subvert the intellectual and academic pursuits carried out by the students. The Bar Association while condemning the armed actions by the Indian Security Forces inside the campus demands that such aggression be stopped forthwith and the campus be allowed to carry out its day to day functions without any interruption by the security forces.
