Two fire tenders torched during protests in Shopian area
Srinagar, May 06: Five militants including an assistant professor of Kashmir University and a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Saddam Padder were killed in a gunfight in Badigam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district and equal number of civilian were killed in post gunfight clashes at different places in the same area.
Reports said following the Cordon and Search Operation on receiving inputs about the presence of militants in Badigam village of Shopian district by the sleuths of Army, CRPF and SOG of J&K Police the militants hiding in a house didn’t pay heed to the surrender offer of SSP Shopian and were engaged in a gunfight that lasted for several hours. The trapped militants included an assistant professor of Kashmir University Muhammad Rafi Bhat and top Hizb commander Saddam Padder. Initially the police approached farther, brother and wife of assistant professor Mohammad Rafi Bhat to persuade him to surrender but while they had travelled a few kilometers from their native village in Ganderbal district they heard the tragic news of the killing of Mohammad Rafi Bhat and his four other associates of Hizbul Mujahideen.
Confirming the killing of five militants the Director General of Police Dr S P Vaid took to micro blogging social networking website twitter and said “Encounter concluded at Badigam Zainpora Shopian, 5 bodies of terrorists recovered. Well done boys – Army/ CRPF/J&K Police.”
Soon after the killing of five militants an equal number civilians were killed and dozens injured in clashes with the government forces at different places in the Shopian district.
Police sources said that a protesting civilian, Adil Ahmad, injured during the clashes, was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the Kulgam district hospital.
Reports from the area said Adil was injured in Behibagh village in Kulgam district.
Another injured civilian, Sajad Ahmad of Dooru in Anantnag district, also succumbed to his injuries. Earlier, Asif Ahmad of Rohmou village of Pulwama died in a Srinagar hospital due to injuries suffered in the clashes.
Over a dozen civilians were injured in the clashes between the protesters and the security forces.
