Srinagar, May 22: The Legal Metrology department received a complaint from a respectable citizen of the city Srinagar against a footwear showroom at Lal Chowk for selling him a pair of shoes for Rs 6295/-with the assurance that the shoes are water-proof and fit for tracking.
The complainant wore the expensive shoes for a couple of times and on one normal rainy day he found percolation of water into the shoes. He rushed to the retail-outlet and complained of the defect. The retail-outlet collected the shoes back for testing for leak/defect and returned the same to customer after some time with the remark that the shoes are water-proof only up to 8 cm height.
The customer was plunged into deep mental agony and as a result lodged the complaint with the department for unfair trade practice adopted by the foot-wear show-room. After receiving the complaint, the field executives of Legal Metrology department on the instructions of Controller Legal Metrology Mr. R.K.Katoch under the supervision of Joint Controller conducted surprise inspection of the show-room to ascertain the genuiness of complaint. During the inspection, it was found that there was no mention on the wrapper/label of the similar shoes available at the premises that the shoes are water-proof only up to 8cm height.
Under Consumer Protection Act, it is an unfair trade practice if any trader makes a false/ misleading statement of usefulness of any goods. It is the mandate of the department to safeguard the interests of consumer from unscrupulous traders. The notice was served to the show-room for adoption of unfair trade practice while promoting his business. The management of the show-room confessed the lapse and took back the defective shoes and returned Rs 6295 to the aggrieved customer. (CNS)
