Srinagar, June 09: Contrary to the state government directives to transporters to charge half fare from student fraternity, students in Summer Capital Srinagar on Saturday alleged that they are charged full fare and are mentally harassed by the bus operators.
The students said that they are forced to pay full fare both in private as well as in governmenttransport instead of the fifty percent fare concession privilege that state government have promised for them. “And when we ask them for concession, we are subjected to mental harassment”, they added.
Saba, a student of SP College Srinagar whocome from Beerwah said that she has to fight with the bus conductors almost everyday for they refuse to take half fare and demand full.“We are often abused by the bus conductors”, said a group of female student from the same college.
Another group of students studying at BeminaCollege Srinagar said that they are often not allowed to occupy seats and are asked to get down from the bus mid-way whenever they ask for fare concession. “Conductor even denies myentry to the bus today when he saw school bagon my shoulder”, said a student Sajad Ahmad Ganie.
“Government’s order of fare concession is less practical and more paper work,” said AamirAhmad, a student of Govt. Polytechnic College, Srinagar.
When this reporter contacted concerned authorities, they said that they would look into these complaints and see that the students arenot harassed in future. “If any bus operator denies them concession in fares, he will be punished under law”, they added.
Earlier, on February 24 this year, traffic Police Srinagar issued an advisory to both private and state-owned bus operators to charge only 50 per cent of the passenger fare from studentstraveling from their residential place to the location of their educational institution and back once in a day.
