Friday prayers disallowed at historic Jamia Masjid

Srinagar, July 5: Ahead of 2nd anniversary of popular Hizb Commander Burhan Wani authorities have either arrested or placed top Hurriyat leaders under house arrest while in a bid to foil possible protests restrictions were imposed restrictions in parts of old Srinagar city including Nowhatta.

No Friday prayers were allowed at historic Jamia Masjid that was sealed by government forces throughout the day.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who addresses the faithful every Friday at the mosque, was placed under house detention.

JKLF Chief Yasin Malik was detained early Friday to prevent him from leading any rallies ahead of the anniversary of slain militant commander Burhan Wani.

Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik has called for Kashmir-wide shutdown and a public meeting in Wani’s native Tral area on Sunday. (CNS)
