Handwara, July 3:  Scores of people at Khanabal Handwara in north Kashmir on Tuesday held a protest sit-in here demanding the restoration of water supply which they said is defunct for the last two years.

Local said the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has neglected the area. They said from time to time, water pipes were laid in the area but “till date, we haven’t received a single drop of water”.

“Pipes are running dry, the prolonged delay in restoration of water supply in the area depicts the poor state of PHE department Handwara,” the residents told GNS.

“This is our third sit-in protest in the recent days but the department seems not to be bothered at all,” they said, adding, “The continuous protests won’t alleviate our sufferings; we urge concerned the higher officials to look into our genuine and long pending demand.”

The protest demonstration against PHE was also joined by the president JK Itehad, Mudasir Tantary who said the demand of locals is genuine and needs to be addressed at the earliest.

“Two days back, a water tanker was sent to provide safe drinking water to the area which was also contaminated,” Mudasir alleged. “People mostly children of the area fell ill after using it.”

Mudasir said he will take up the issue with the local administration and assured to resolve the problem within a week’s time. (GNS)
