Cyclists question selection process for Srinagar-Leh cycling event

Srinagar, Sep 25: The J&K Cycling Association backed Tour of Leh cycling event that started on September 23 from Srinagar with four members as cyclists and a manager and couple of support staff has come under criticism from cyclists over non-conduct of selection trials to select players for the event.

The event that claims to cover distance of around 435 kilometres from Srinagar to Leh in just 20 hours has got four members, Mehraj Qayoom, Mushtaq Ahmad, Dr. Amin and Amir Asad as cyclists while as Bashir Damna as Team Manager. The event was flagged off by National Conference Youth Leader Salman Sagar from Srinagar.

Ironically, no selection process or trials were held to select cyclists for the ambitious event and among the players is cycling association official Mushtaq Ahmad. He is Joint Secretary of J&K Cycling Association and instead of giving chance to budding and talented cyclists he has opted to be player himself.

For the event, the group has appointed Sopore based Apple dealer Bashir Damna as Team Manager which looks mockery of the whole sports.

The event is sponsored by Common Cause Trust, Damna Adventure, JK Bank, Rahim Motors,

KCCI, Bengal Matting Agency, Kehwah Groups, Hud Hud, Del Monte and JK Tourism.

Cyclists of State have raised serious question mark on the event and have questioned the credibility and sincerity on the organizers.

“Association is conducting this event with number of sponsors and money involved. But cyclists who have been training hard for years have not been informed and no selection process was held,” said a cyclist.

“It is shocking that a retired cyclist who is now joint secretary of association has projected himself as cyclist for the event as it involves huge money. Instead of giving chance to talented cyclists he has opted to avail benefits himself,” another cyclist said.

Another cyclist said that none of the team members are well known cyclists and the entire affair in the event is shoddy.

“When you appoint Apple dealer as team manager and then project yourself as player, one doesn’t have to use any sort of serious imagination to get reality behind the event. It is mockery in the name of sport and is loot,” said a visibly dejected player.

A cyclists said that riders who are four in number have got imported cycling jersey and other equipment free of cost for the tour and it is because of that reason Joint Secretary himself jumped in the event.

“Not only he is taking benefits in shape of jersey equipment but he has taken along his close confidants on Leh Tour. Is this what J&K Cycling Association is doing in the name of promoting sports,” they questioned.

Cyclists have now requested Secretary Sports Council to look into the matter and how come a joint secretary himself put in the player list and appoint apple dealer as team Manager.
