Contractor accuses PHE officials of corruption

Kupwara, Oct 20: A contractor from North Kashmir’s border area Saturday alleged that officials from PHE department are harassing him as he is unable to grease their palms.

Sheikh Muhammad Qasim said that tender work to construct Water Supply Scheme Lontha, Sathphalls in Karnah area of district Kupwara was allotted to him by Public Health Engineering Department against the cost of Rs 61.00 lakh in 2016 while till date he has already completed 50% of work on the scheme.

“To my shock and surprise I was forced to stop my work as I didn’t agree to grease the palms of PHE officials who have been continuously demanding bribe from me,” he said.

Due to stoppage of work on the water supply scheme, at least 15, 000 inhabitants from different hamlets of Karnah including Lontha, Kandi, Dildar, Batapora, Chhummkot have been affected. “The PHE Division has become the hub of corruption in Karnah. Without greasing the palm of officials no work gets done. If action is not initiated against the corrupt officials, people will be left with only option to hit to roads,” he said.

Concerned Executive Engineer told CNS that the work has been stopped as the said contractor didn’t complete all the formalities.
