Srinagar, Oct 10: The hype surrounding the election to Urban Local Bodies, held after 13-years, failed to cut ice with the people as only 3 percent of the electorate cast their votes in the 2nd of the 4-phased election in Kashmir Valley on Wednesday.

The government had placed adequate security arrangements as many companies of the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police were on duty.

According to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) J&K, Shaleen Kabra, overall 31.3% polling was witnessed in the Phase-II of Municipal Polls across the state.

Kabra said in Jammu division 78.6% polling was witnessed in 214 wards that went to polls today while Kashmir division witnessed average 3.4% polling in 49 wards with Bandipora recording the highest 35.6% voting.

The phase-I of the elections, held after 2005, marked low turnout of 8.34 percent with 7075 people out of 84792 voters casting their ballot in 58 wards, spanned over six districts—Kupwara, Bandiopora, Baramulla, Srinagar, Budgam and Anantnag.

The CEO said the cumulative polling percentage till date is 46.7% with 67.3% voting recorded in Jammu division and 8.34% in Kashmir Division in Phase-I and Phase-II.

In Jammu division, the CEO said, highest polling percentage of 84.4% was recorded in Reasi.

He said the cumulative polling percentage till date is 47.2% with 67.7% voting recorded in Jammu division and 8.3% in Kashmir Division in Phase-I and Phase-II.

The CEO said that 544 polling stations were designated across the State for Phase-II with 270 polling stations in Kashmir Division and 274 in Jammu Division.

According to GNS, the CEO said 1029 candidates are in the fray for 263 Municipal Wards for Phase-II with 881 candidates in Jammu division and 148 in Kashmir division for Phase-II.

In the first two phases, he said, 436285 voters have exercised their franchise out of a total of 933,000 voters who were eligible to vote for these two phases.
