SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Hundreds of CPI(M) activistsassembled in Kulgam town and took out protest demonstration.
The protest rally was led by Mohamad Afzal Parry, senior leader. The protest demonstration demanded uninterrupted power supply, safe drinking water, adequate compensation to the snow affected farmers, implementation of crop insurance scheme and stoppage of indiscriminate arrests of youth.
These indiscriminate arrests have created a sense of fear among the people.
The rally marched through Kulgam town and presented a memorandum to Dy Commissioner.
Later, rich tributes were paid to veteran Kisan leader, ex-legislator and freedom fighter late Abdul Kabir Wani in a function at Town Kulgam to observe his 25th death anniversary.
The speakers highlighted the contribution of the late leader in bringing political awakening among the peasants of the state.
While paying homage to the late leader, Mohamad Afzal Parry CPI(M) leader said that Abdul Kabir Wani pioneered Kisan struggle in the state, which will continue to inspire all those leaders who wish to contribute selflessly for the welfare and well being of people especially the peasant class.
The CPI(M) leader said that the meager compensation announced by the government to snow affected farmers is a cruel joke.
The government should provide adequatecompensation keeping in view the recurring losses to the farmers.
He also demanded one-time waiver of KCC and other agricultural loans to the small farmers and fruit growers whose harvest was damaged by the snowfall.
Ghulam Mohiudin Lone called for fully implementation of Crop Insurance Scheme (CIS) in the state.
Though the announcement of crop insurance scheme was made by the government, it is unfortunate that the said scheme is not implemented in Kashmir valley so far.
The state being vulnerable to natural calamities, implementation of crop insurance scheme can provide respite to the calamity affected kisans and orchardists.
Among others, Abdul Hamid, Ghulam Ahmad Ganie, Ab Majeed Malik and Ab Rashid Najar spoke on the occasion.
