Srinagar, Dec 31: Former chief minister and President Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti Monday castigated the Centre over Triple Talaq bill saying that by doing so, it was set to destroy the Muslim family structure.
Mufti said that that the bill will take a toll on the men and women of the Muslim community economically, by adding that the marriage was a contract between the two and whosoever did not want to be in the relationship, “could part ways personally.”
Mehbooba impressed that the democracy is not run through brute majority and that the Muslims accept the decisions of Supreme Court invalidating Triple Talaq unlike the Sabarimala judgment.
“It was better to empower Muslim women to be able to face the world independently in case of a breakup,” she said
“I have gone through a broken marriage and I feel that after such a situation, a woman faces financial challenges as to how to take care of children,” she added.
Addressing a press conference here at her Gupkar residence, Mufti said that by brining Triple Talaq bill, “BJP has now entered into our houses.”
She added that the Muslims from India and Jammu and Kashmir had decided to stay with Gandhis’ secular democratic India, “let it not transform into Zia-ul-Haq’s Pakistans.”
She further said that after creating divisions on religious and sectarian lines, BJP was now resorting to divide Muslim families through Triple Talaq bill. “With economic aggression aimed at Muslims through restrictions imposed on meat and leather, Triple Talaq bill further deteriorate the situation,” she added.
