Tral, July 11: A historical water pond in Tral area has become a storing point of garbage, at the time, when a campaign on saving water bodies is at its peak in the valley.
The locals in Tral sub division rued that the historical water pond commonly known as “Batnag” used to have fresh water years before.
They said that as the time passed on, the pond started to loose its essence, after locals started to use it for dumping purposes.
“Solid wastes, deadwood, garbage & other wastes are being accumulated in it, which is day by degrading its quality,” locals said, adding that concerned authorities should ensure its preservation.
Residents fear that dumping of waste will make the pond totally defunct in coming time if concrete steps are not taken for its safety.
They said that it will degrade the quality of groundwater as well which is the “matter of grave concern”.
Meanwhile, Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Tral, Manzoor Ahmad has said that they are going to sanitize the water pond tommorow morning.
He however said that his team has already sanitized many water bodies in Tral and efforts to keep “Tral neat & clean will be continued”.
