JAMMU, APRIL 28: Gajan Singh Khajuria, President J&K Motor Transport Companies Association (JKMTCA) today demanded decent insurance cover for truck drivers and cleaners carrying essential supplies in various parts of country during Covid-19 lockdown.
In this regard, Singh appreciated SRS President Rajiv Mahajan for highlighting their basic genuine issues and appealing public to honour and felicitate them as true Corona Warriors.
Singh said that our Association has taken up various issues with the government, including providing insurance to truck drivers and co-workers, and is hopeful of a positive response.
“We are hopeful of a positive announcement regarding insurance of drivers,” Singh said.
He said officials were also apprised of reports of harassment and stopping of vehicles by authorities at various places despite the Ministry of Home Affairs directives with regard to operation of essential services.
He sought a relief package from the government, including giving Rs 15,000 to each driver to sustain his family during the COVID-19 lockdown.
The truckers plying on the highways to carry medicines and essential items during the lockdown do not have usual places to eat and NHAI `should provide them food at its toll plazas.
He said Truckers facing problems as dhabas and roadside eateries are closed.
Singh suggested government to provide relief package and safety gears for truck drivers and helpers since they are also part of essential service provider.
He demanded government to set up a 24X7 helpline number for truck drivers for help in case of any interruption on highways.
He sought direction to law enforcing agencies to allow truck drivers to move on after they check their driving licence.
He added that truck drivers and helpers are feeling scared of their future as they need to visit different areas to ensure that the consignments are picked up and unloaded.
