DC Budgam assures portable drinking water after pandemic
Budgam, April 13: Senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and Ex VC JK Cements, Er Nazir Ahmad Yatoo on Monday lonely visited Shumnag Village of Charar-e-Sharif belt in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, where the villagers earlier protested against the authorities for contaminated water.
Sr PDP leader, Er Nazir Ahmad Yatoo, who lonely visited the spot, with due permission of Deputy Commissioner Budgam, said that , the drinking water fetched from other streams is supplied to households without proper filtration by PHE department.
Yatoo said that the water tank, where from the drinking water is supplied to these villages, lack filtration plant, even a bottle neck.
The PHE department is providing the locality dirty water. Most of the times, they receive insects and dirt particles with the water,” he said.
Er Nazir Yatoo said that, most of the villages of this area are doubly vulnerable to the Covid-19 spread due to frequent outages of drinking water that is preventing people from the WHO-guided handwash protocol. The consumers in Charar-e-Sharif area find it difficult to maintain requisite hygiene amid the mounting Covid-19 threat.
Yatoo further said that, it has now became a daily routine for locals of the Shumnag to visit the hospital, with strains of Hepatitis, including Hepatitis E, diarrheal diseases, including Cholera, Typhoid, and Dysentery caused due to this contaminated water. He said that there is a threat of water borne diseases in Charar-e-Sharif villages.
“At a time when sanitation is a national mission and prime minister himself campaigns for it, and also at a time when a simple hand wash is the key safety measure against Covid-19, the authorities here are lying through their teeth,” Yatoo said.
Soon after returning back from the Shumnag, Yatoo visited the office of Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Mr Tariq Hussain Ganaie and urged him to make arrangement of filtration plant, so that a filtered water would be supplied to these villages.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Budgam informed Er Nazir Yatoo that soon after the pandemic, he will take care of the water tank, so that the locals will get portable drinking water.
