Kangan, July 11: Residents of several village of this central Kashmir district on Saturday accused the authorities of supplying contaminated drinking water supply to them.
The locals Babapora Kulan and adjacent areas told news agency KNT that they receive water supply from a water filtration plant while the facility remains uncovered and as a result garbage and other waste ends up in the plant.
“Filtration Plant at Babapora Kulan was damaged in 2015 floods and the work on new filtration plant which started in 2017 is still incomplete. After some repair of damaged filtration plant, water was supplied to people but that plant is without any fencing. The animal refuse lands in the plant and we get the same filthy water,” said a local Ghulam Hasan Bhat adding that contaminated water supply is posing a serious risk to their health.
“We fear contracting water-borne diseases due to the polluted drinking water supply. Despite repeatedly taking up the matter with the department, we continue to suffer,” he said.
When contacted Executive Engineer PHE Division Ganderbal Muhammad Aslam said he is busy and can’t comment on the matter.
