Bandipora, Aug 22: From past 5 years, inhabitants of Nowgam and adjacent villagers are waiting for the day when Jammu Kashmir Bank will open a branch in Nowgam are here in Sumbal Tehsil of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
The local of Nowgam and those living in adjacent areas including Shiganpora, Zalpora, Anderkote, Gund Nowgam, Rakh-e-Asham, Gadakhud, Malapora, Aankhul, Akbar Abad, Murtaza Abad, Shilwat, Rakhe Sultanpora have to travel 8 kilometers for bank transactions. The nearest JK Bank branch for them is in Sumbal which is 8 kms away from Nowgam.
The locals staged a protest on Saturday to attract the attention of the JK Bank authorities.
“Since 2016 we have been requesting JK Bank authorities to open a branch in Nowgam. All documents in this regard are complete and we had even met former Advisor Khurshid Ganaie and incumbent advisor to LG Farooq Khan who assured us of opening a new bank branch in Nowgam locality,” the locals told news agency Kashmir News Trust.
“We are facing tremendous hardships in the absence of a JK Bank branch in the area. “We are being forced to cover a lot of distance to reach bank branches, resulting in wastage of time and money,” they said.
The villagers appealed to authorities to intervene and solve their problem as soon as possible.
When contacted, a top Jammu Kashmir Bank official told KNT that there is a proposal to set up a new branch in Nowgam and the matter will be decided in coming days.
