To avoid the repeat of students clashes, NIT takes precautionary measures
Srinagar, Sept 18: Students of NIT Srinagar on Friday appealed authorities to wave off their hostel fee for pandemic months hostel facilities were given to Covid-19 patients who were kept there for quarantine purposes.

Talking to KNS, students expressed resentment over demanding of hostel fee for Covid-19 pandemic months. They said soon after the outbreak of disease in Valley, authorities suspended educational activities across and asked students to vacate hostels on temporary basis.
Students said after surge in Covid-19 caseloads in Valley, several hotels and educational institutions were allocated as quarantine centers where Covid-19 infected people were kept for months.
“However when authorities issued orders for unlock and started resumption of services including education, authorities at NIT demanded hostel fee of these months from concerned students”, students told KNS.
They added during the pandemic NIT authorities earned hostel charges from Government who took the possession of hostel buildings for quarantine purposes. They questioned how come students will pay hostel charges for the period in which Covid-19 infected people were kept there?
“NIT authority is asking students to pay 28,000 rupees as hostel charges for six months which is nothing but injustice with the community”, students said.
They appealed authorities to waive off their hostel charges and ensure smooth functioning of educational standards without resorting to excesses.
However when KNS contacted Registrar NIT Qaiser Bukhari, his mobile came divert repeatedly while another officer Adnan Qayoom said “I am not mandated to spoke on the matter”.
