STP proves costly for Anantnag locals Streets dug up 3 years ago by UEED left unattended

MUNEEB-UL-ISLAM

Anantnag, Sep 26: From past three years the interior roads of Anantnag town are in shambles. These look of these streets and roads were disfigured by Urban Engineering and Environment Department (UEED) that started work on the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Anantnag town in 2018.

“Main roads have been fixed but the interior roads in multiple areas of Anantnag town are still in shambles and despite government allocating funds for the repairing of these roads, R&B has done nothing much to the annoyance of the people,” locals told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

They said UEED dug up the roads in almost all the market places and interiors of the town with the permission of Roads and Buildings Department to fix the sewage underground pipes. “Though the market place roads were macadamized after public outcry, but the interior roads and streets were left unattended.”

The streets of Sarnal, Kadipora, Cheeni chowk, Reshibazar, Janglatmandi, Ashajipora, Lazibal, Malaknag are in shambles. “The winter is coming and it will be difficult for people to pass through these streets when there will be rain or snowfall,” the locals said adding that potholes on the roads create problems for commuters and pedestrians as well.

“STP is still incomplete and so are our streets and roads. This is despite the fact government had released funds for the project in the very beginning.”

An official said that R&B prepared estimate of the damaged streets at 3 crores.

“More than three years have passed but neither the STP is in sight nor damaged streets repaired.”

Superintending Engineer UEED said that they have already released Rs 3 Crore and asked R&B to repair these damaged streets and roads.

Assistant Executive Engineer, R&B, Abdul Rashid said that they have invited tenders and these streets will be repaired before the onset of winter this year.
