Kolkata, Jan 23: An uncomfortable situation arose in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogans filled the air when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee got up to speak in today’s event at the Victoria Memorial Hall on the occasion of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 125th birthday.
Angered by the slogans, a livid Mamata said she would not speak as a protest as this was a government and not a political programme.
As Mamata was about to speak, some people in the audience shoute ‘Jai Sri Ram’ which annoyed the chief minister.
The event moderator asked the crowd to remain calm but no one paid heed to this appeal.
The slogan chanting in front of the stage continued and increased, after which the Chief Minister took the mic and said, “I think government ceremonies have a special status and respect. It is a government event. Not a meeting of any political party. It is an event for all political parties and the common man.”
Expressing gratitude and anger, Mamata said, “I am grateful to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Culture for organizing this event in Kolkata. But it is not fair to disrespect anyone after inviting. So I will not say anything more on this occasion in protest.”
In the end, Mamata Banerjee went to her seat and sat down saying ‘Jai Hind’, ‘Jai Bangla’.
The sudden incident left Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others present at the event uneasy. UNI
