Srinagar, May 15: Ghulam Nabi Malik General Secretary J&K Kisan Tehreek on Saturday demanded immediate relief for farmers and orchardists whose crops and fruits were damaged due to heavy rains and hailstorm in Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramulla Kupwara and other parts of valley.
He called for a comprehensive compensation for affected farmers, orchardists who suffered extensive damages due to heavy hailstorm that wreaked havoc in in large areas of Dachnipora, Liver, Kathsoo, Budroo, Srigufwara, Khiram, Nowshera, Hetgam, Mehind, Sirhama, Salia and other parts of valley . The unprecedented hailstorm has resulted in huge loss to the fruit growers and farmers of the affected areas.
A few days back Zazerpora, Paniwah, Kinepora, Super, Nanibugh, Bugam, Awgam, Ganwsargam Kadder, Dadekoot and Khee villages of Kulgam also experienced heavy hailstorm causing damage to apple and other fruit crop and depriving the fruit growing the only source of livelihood.
The government should assess the damages immediately so that the orchardists and peasants are provided compensation well in time.
Horticulture in Kashmir has suffered massive losses in the last two years due to weather vagaries and other reasons which has resulted in massive losses to the growers and farmers.
Survival of lakhs of people associated with the horticulture sector is at stake. People associated with horticulture in J&K constitute a considerable percentage of total employment in the region and the government must give due attention to the crisis faced by the farmers.
